The organisation; The Fako Lawyers Association (FAKLA) which seeks to uphold the rule of law, access to justice, the promotion of Human Rights and Good Governance in Cameroon, is not happy with the current situation .
Below is an except from their press release.
CONDEMN the recurrent abuses meted out on lawyers daily and the strive to defend the now almost completely entrapped citizens.
The lowest case in point being that of Barrister AYUKOTANG NDEP NKONGHO, who was arrested and detained for 48 hours in the cause of carrying out his duties as a lawyer.
In this light, we commend the continuous protection given to us by the Cameroon Bar Association in these circumstances.
CALL ON ALL LAWYERS to be vigilant and ready to fight against any form of intimidation and or threats from those in authority who have made it their mantra to settle score or subdue lawyers to continue to perpetuate their subjugation of the population of this Division.
CALL ON THE GOVERNMENT, the National and International Community, Human Rights Organisations, to henceforth focus their attention on the plights of Lawyers in this Division and the region as a whole, as we strive to defend the rights of our practically entrapped citizen.
A CALL ON GOVERNMENT to amend the law creating the Higher Judicial Council not only to
include an equal number of Anglophones and Francophones but not in conformity with the
recommendations contained in Communication 268/2003 of the African Commission on Human
and People’s Rights, and to also include the representation of the Cameroon Bar Association.
DONE AND Dated, THIS 20th DAY OF AUGUST, 2020.
