President Museveni and his DR Congo counterpart, Felix Tshisekedi, officially opened the Mpondwe bridge in Kasese district on Wednesday, June 16,2021.
The Mpondwe Bridge is located on Kampala-Mubende-Fort Portal-Uganda/DRC Border Road, at Mpondwe trading centre. It runs over River Lhubiriha at the Uganda – Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) border.
The Mpondwe bridge project was undertaken to replace the old Bailey Bridge which was deemed unsafe
for the heavy vehicular traffic that comprises of heavy cargo trucks due to wear and tear.
The two presidents launched the bridge as part of a comprehensive programme that includes the groundbreaking of roads that will be constructed in the Democratic Republic of Congo by Uganda.
DRC is Uganda’s second biggest regional trade partner after Kenya. It is envisioned that fixing DRC roads will improve mobility, security and boost Uganda’s trade and investment.
President Felix Tshisekedi to President Museveni
Today is a great day. The day that is going to reverse the relationship between DRC and Uganda. This important day is the beginning of the construction of the road to Ben, an initiative by President Museveni.I am sure, if this project is complete, it will work towards our economic development. That is why, we as Congolese encourage it. I wish to encourage the people constructing the road to do good work. I believe God is going to help us achieve this. Instead of building walls, it is better to build bridges. This initiative is a good one. I am at your complete exposure for us to go and inaugurate the project
